What does gas cost when you use it?
Work out what a shower, dinner, the oven or a year's heating costs on gas – per use, per month and per year, in kWh and cubic metres. The price is filled in with today's Danish gas price or your country's official household price, and you can change it.
Ofgem's price cap per kWh, 1 Oct – 31 Dec 2026. The daily standing charge comes on top. Change it if you know your own price. British gas: 11.2 kWh per m³ (Ofgem's formula with 39.5 MJ/m³).

How the calculator works
From hot water to cubic metres
A 10-minute shower uses about 120 litres of water, heated from 10 to 38 degrees. That takes about 3.9 kWh of heat, and since a gas boiler turns about 90 per cent of the gas into heat, it comes to 4.3 kWh of gas – just under 0.4 m³ of Danish natural gas. These are the same assumptions My Gas Price uses when it works out savings.
Kilowatt-hours or cubic metres
A gas meter counts cubic metres, while many bills in Europe charge gas per kWh. A cubic metre of Danish natural gas gives 11 kWh. Elsewhere the calorific value varies with the gas, so the calculator uses an average of 10.55 kWh per m³ unless the country's own figure is known. Switch the unit next to the price if your price is per m³.
Which price is filled in
For Denmark it is today's gas price from Energinet plus Evida's distribution, taxes and VAT – the same sum as on the Gas price today page. The supplier's mark-up and the fixed yearly charges are left out. For the other countries it is Eurostat's average household price with all taxes, and for Great Britain Ofgem's price cap. If you know your own price, type it in.
Questions about gas use
- What does a shower cost on gas?
- A 10-minute shower with an ordinary shower head uses about 4.3 kWh of gas, roughly 0.4 m³. Multiply by your price per kWh and you have the cost; the calculator does it for you at today's price.
- How much gas does a house use in a year?
- Gas price today and My Gas Price reckon with a Danish household using 1,650 m³ a year, a little over 18,000 kWh. A well-insulated house uses less, a large older one more. Your own figure is on your annual statement.
- How do I convert cubic metres to kWh?
- Multiply the cubic metres by the gas's calorific value. For Danish natural gas that is 11 kWh per m³, in other countries usually between 10 and 11.5, and for Dutch low-calorific gas just under 10. The figure is on your bill.
- Why is my bill higher than the calculator's figure?
- The calculator only uses the price per kWh. Your bill adds standing charges and fixed fees, and your supplier's mark-up may be higher than average. To follow your own bill, read your meter in My Gas Price.
