Gas prices in Germany
Germany has no regulated gas price for households. Each supplier sets its own tariffs, and a household that has never chosen a contract is supplied by the local default supplier at its basic tariff (Grundversorgung). The Federal Network Agency (Bundesnetzagentur) regulates the networks, and the Federal Statistical Office (Destatis) publishes what households paid on average, twice a year.
Gas matters a great deal here: roughly every second home in Germany is heated with gas, more than with any other fuel, so the gas price decides the heating bill of millions of households.
Before 2022 more than half of Germany's gas came from Russia by pipeline. Today it comes mainly from Norway, the Netherlands and Belgium, and as LNG through new terminals on the North Sea and Baltic coasts. On top of the gas itself come network charges, a gas tax (Energiesteuer), a carbon price on heating fuels and 19% VAT.

Gas prices in Germany explained
What the price is made of
A German gas bill has a fixed annual charge (Grundpreis) and a price per kWh (Arbeitspreis). The kWh price covers the gas the supplier buys, the network charges set under the Federal Network Agency's rules, a concession fee paid to the municipality, the gas tax and the CO₂ price from the national emissions trading scheme for fuels, which rises step by step. VAT is added to all of it.
The meter counts cubic metres; the bill converts them to kWh with the gas's calorific value and a volume correction factor (Zustandszahl).
2022 and the gas price brake
When Russian deliveries stopped in 2022, wholesale prices hit records and many suppliers raised their prices several times. The state paid households' December 2022 instalment, cut VAT on gas from 19% to 7% from October 2022 to the end of February 2024, and throughout 2023 capped the price at 12 cents per kWh for 80% of the consumption the supplier had forecast (Gaspreisbremse).
How to pay less
If you are still on the basic tariff, a special contract (Sondervertrag) with the same or another supplier is usually cheaper, and the basic supply can be left with two weeks' notice. Compare the fixed charge and the kWh price together for your own consumption, check how long a price guarantee lasts, and read your meter whenever the price changes so the bill splits the periods correctly.
Reading the German figures
Destatis' figure is an average over all households for the half-year just ended, all taxes included; Eurostat's covers households using 20–199 GJ a year, so the two differ a little. Neither is a price you can sign up for today: they show the level German households actually paid.

Questions about the gas price
- What does gas cost in Germany?
- Destatis average: 11.58 c€/kWh (latest official figures for H1 2026). Eurostat's average household price in Germany was 0.1156 €/kWh in H1 2026, all taxes included.
- Is gas cheaper in Germany than in neighbouring countries?
- In H1 2026 households in Germany paid 0.1156 €/kWh, against 0.1211 €/kWh in Denmark, 0.1622 €/kWh in the Netherlands and 0.1240 €/kWh in Austria (Eurostat, in euros). The EU average was 0.1103 €/kWh.
- How has the gas price changed in Germany?
- From H1 2025 to H1 2026 the household price fell by 4.9%, from 0.1216 €/kWh to 0.1156 €/kWh. Over the last three years it ranged from 0.1145 €/kWh to 0.1238 €/kWh.
- What is the Grundversorgung?
- The basic supply: the tariff of the supplier with the most household customers in a network area, which serves every household without a contract of its own. It can be left with two weeks' notice, but it is often dearer than other contracts.
- Why is there a CO₂ price on gas in Germany?
- Since 2021 Germany's national emissions trading scheme (BEHG) has put a price on the CO₂ from heating and transport fuels. Suppliers pass it on in the kWh price, and because it rises step by step it pushes the gas price up regardless of the wholesale market.
- How do I convert cubic metres to kWh?
- Multiply the cubic metres on your meter by the calorific value (Brennwert) and the volume correction factor (Zustandszahl); both are on your bill. The result is usually around 10 to 11 kWh per cubic metre.
