Gas prices in the Netherlands
Dutch households buy gas from a supplier of their choice on a fixed, variable or dynamic contract; there is no regulated price. The Authority for Consumers and Markets (ACM) supervises the suppliers and regulates the network tariffs, and Statistics Netherlands (CBS) publishes the average consumer tariffs every month.
For decades almost every Dutch home was connected to the gas grid and heated by a gas boiler, a legacy of the Groningen field. That is changing: new homes have been built without a gas connection since 2018 and heat pumps are spreading, but gas still heats most homes.
Production at Groningen, once Europe's largest onshore gas field, has ended because it caused earthquakes, and the country now imports most of its gas, by pipeline from Norway and as LNG through terminals at Rotterdam and Eemshaven. The Dutch wholesale hub TTF is the benchmark for gas prices across Europe. Energy tax (energiebelasting) and 21% VAT make up a large part of the household bill.

Gas prices in the Netherlands explained
A price per cubic metre
Dutch bills count gas in cubic metres. The price per m³ is the supplier's delivery price plus energy tax, both with VAT; on top come a fixed delivery charge and the network operator's transport charge per year. Each household also receives a fixed energy tax reduction (belastingvermindering) per year, which is deducted on the electricity bill.
The 2022 crisis and the 2023 price cap
When prices soared, the government cut VAT on energy from 21% to 9% for the second half of 2022, gave households a discount of €190 a month on their energy bills in November and December 2022, and for all of 2023 capped the gas price at €1.45 per m³ for consumption up to 1,200 m³ a year (prijsplafond). The cap was not renewed for 2024.
Fixed, variable or dynamic
A fixed contract locks the price for one to three years, a variable one can change during the contract, and a dynamic one follows the wholesale price day by day. Pass on meter readings when you switch or move, and compare your monthly advance (termijnbedrag) with the annual statement so you are not left with a large back payment.
Reading the Dutch figures
The official figure at the top is CBS's average consumer tariff for the latest month, per cubic metre including energy tax and VAT, with the fixed charges listed separately. Eurostat's figure is per kWh, and a cubic metre of Dutch household gas holds a little under 10 kWh, so the two are not directly comparable.

Questions about the gas price
- What does gas cost in the Netherlands?
- CBS average tariff: 1.3886 €/m³ (latest official figures for September 2026 (provisional)). Eurostat's average household price in the Netherlands was 0.1622 €/kWh in H1 2026, all taxes included.
- Is gas cheaper in the Netherlands than in neighbouring countries?
- In H1 2026 households in the Netherlands paid 0.1622 €/kWh, against 0.0846 €/kWh in Belgium and 0.1156 €/kWh in Germany (Eurostat, in euros). The EU average was 0.1103 €/kWh.
- How has the gas price changed in the Netherlands?
- From H1 2025 to H1 2026 the household price rose by 0.5%, from 0.1614 €/kWh to 0.1622 €/kWh. Over the last three years it ranged from 0.1544 €/kWh to 0.1714 €/kWh.
- What is energiebelasting?
- The Dutch energy tax on gas and electricity, set by law each year and collected by suppliers on behalf of the tax authority, the Belastingdienst. For households it is charged per cubic metre of gas with VAT on top, and it is a large part of the price.
- Why is gas no longer produced at Groningen?
- Decades of extraction caused earthquakes that damaged thousands of homes in the province of Groningen. The government cut production step by step, stopped it in 2023 and closed the field by law in 2024.
- How many kWh are in a cubic metre of Dutch gas?
- Roughly 9.8 kWh, because Dutch households receive low-calorific gas. Bills count cubic metres, so you only need the conversion to compare with prices per kWh elsewhere.
