How to work it out yourself

Example: a blanket of 125 × 150 cm from 12 cm granny squares joined as you go, with a 4 cm border all round. One square weighs 18 g, the border about 150 g, and the yarn comes in 50 g skeins.

  1. Across, the border takes 2 × 4 cm, leaving 117 cm for squares: 117 ÷ 12 = 9.75.
  2. 9 squares make 116 cm (−9 cm), 10 make 128 cm (+3 cm). The nearest is 10 across.
  3. Along, the same way: 142 ÷ 12 = 11.83, so 140 or 152 cm, and the nearest is 12 along. That is 10 × 12 = 120 squares.
  4. Yarn: 120 × 18 g + 150 g = 2,310 g, ±5 % = 2,194.5 to 2,425.5 g. 2,425.5 ÷ 50 = 48.51, so 49 skeins.

"At least" picks the smallest count that reaches the size, "at most" the largest that stays within it. With a join between squares, add it once less than the squares: size = squares × motif + (squares − 1) × join + 2 × border.

Questions

What size is a baby blanket or a throw?
There is no standard, and the sources disagree. The typical sizes in the calculator are our own rounded figures, such as 80 × 100 cm for a baby blanket and 130 × 160 cm for a sofa throw. They only fill in the fields, which you can change.
Should I measure the square before or after blocking?
After. A blocked square is usually a little larger than one straight off the hook, and it is the blocked size that ends up in the blanket.
What do nearest, at least and at most mean?
Nearest picks the count that comes closest to the size, the larger one on a tie. At least picks the smallest count that reaches the size, at most the largest that stays within it.
Why does the finished size say about?
Because your squares are measured by hand and vary a little. The counts of squares are exact; the size they make is an estimate.
