Gas prices in Hungary

Hungary regulates household gas prices under its utility cost reduction programme (rezsicsökkentés): households are supplied by the state-owned universal service provider MVM Next at a price the government fixes, and that price has stayed low for years. The energy regulator MEKH oversees the market.

Gas is Hungary's main heating fuel; a very large share of homes have a gas boiler or gas convector heaters, so the regulated price matters to almost every household.

Since August 2022 the low price applies only up to average consumption, set at 1,729 cubic metres a year per home; gas used above that is charged at a much higher, market-based price. Hungary still buys most of its gas from Russia under a long-term contract, delivered via TurkStream and Serbia.

Gas prices in Hungary explained

Two prices on one bill

A Hungarian household pays the regulated price up to the average-consumption threshold and a market-based price above it, which is several times higher. VAT on gas is 27%, the highest standard rate in the EU, and applies to both parts.

Why prices stayed low in 2022

Because the government fixes the household price, it did not follow the wholesale market when prices soared in 2022; the state and MVM covered the difference. Since August 2022 only consumption above the threshold has felt market prices.

Reading the Hungarian figures

Eurostat's figure is in forint per kWh with all taxes, for households using 20–199 GJ a year, and mostly reflects the regulated price. Households that go over the threshold pay considerably more per kWh for that part of their use than this average suggests.

Is gas cheaper in Hungary than in neighbouring countries?
In H1 2026 households in Hungary paid 0.0330 €/kWh, against 0.1240 €/kWh in Austria, 0.0626 €/kWh in Slovakia and 0.0594 €/kWh in Romania (Eurostat, in euros). The EU average was 0.1103 €/kWh.

What is rezsicsökkentés?
Hungary's utility cost reduction programme, introduced in 2013, under which the government fixes low household prices for gas, electricity and district heating. Since August 2022 the reduced gas price applies only up to average consumption.
Why is gas cheaper in Hungary than in Sweden?
Hungary's government fixes the household price below the market level up to average consumption, while Sweden adds high energy and carbon taxes and spreads the cost of a small network over few customers. Hungary even has the higher VAT rate, so the difference lies in regulation and energy taxes, not in the price of the gas itself.
What happens above 1,729 cubic metres a year?
Gas above the yearly threshold is billed at a much higher, market-based price, so a large house heated with gas can pay far more per cubic metre for the last part of its consumption.
