Gas prices in Romania

Romania's household gas market was fully liberalised in 2020, but since the 2022 crisis the government has capped the price households pay per kWh. The energy regulator ANRE oversees the market and sets the network tariffs.

Gas is widely used for heating and cooking in Romanian homes, including many city flats that have their own wall-mounted boiler (centrală de apartament) instead of district heating.

Romania is one of the EU's largest gas producers and covers most of its consumption from its own fields. The Neptun Deep project in the Black Sea, developed by OMV Petrom and Romgaz, is set to add significant volumes later this decade.

Gas prices in Romania explained

The household price cap

Under emergency rules adopted in 2022, suppliers may charge households no more than a capped price per kWh including VAT, and the scheme has been extended several times; the state compensates suppliers whose costs are higher. Eurostat's figures for Romania reflect this cap.

Home-grown gas

Because most gas is produced at home by Romgaz and OMV Petrom, Romania imports only a small share of what it uses, mostly in winter. That makes it less exposed to the European market than countries that import everything, although wholesale prices still affect what suppliers pay.

Reading the Romanian figures

Eurostat reports Romania in lei and in euros. Because the cap is set in lei, the lei figure is the one shown at the top, while the comparison with Bulgaria, Hungary and Greece uses the euro figures for the same half-year.
