Gas prices in Slovakia

In Slovakia household gas prices are regulated: the Regulatory Office for Network Industries (Úrad pre reguláciu sieťových odvetví, ÚRSO) approves the maximum prices suppliers may charge households, and the largest supplier, SPP, serves most of them.

Gas heats a large share of Slovak homes, in family houses as well as in flats with their own boilers, and is widely used for hot water and cooking.

For decades Slovakia was the main transit route for Russian gas to Western Europe. The transit through Ukraine ended at the start of 2025, and Slovakia now also buys gas that reaches it through Austria, the Czech Republic and Hungary.

Gas prices in Slovakia explained

Regulated prices and state support

Since the 2022 crisis the government has kept household gas prices close to their earlier level by compensating SPP and other suppliers for part of the difference, so Slovak households were largely shielded from the market's rise. The regulated price has a fixed monthly charge and a price per kWh covering the gas, distribution and transmission, and VAT is added.

A former transit country

Slovakia's large pipeline system was built to carry Russian gas westwards, and its transit fees long mattered to the state budget. With the end of the Ukrainian route, the same pipes now increasingly run in the other direction, bringing gas from the west and south into the country.

Reading the Slovak figures

Eurostat's half-yearly averages in euros, with all taxes, mostly show the regulated price that Slovak households pay; they move far less than wholesale prices did because of the state support.
