Gas prices in Greece
Greek households buy gas from licensed suppliers at market prices, which many suppliers announce month by month. The Regulatory Authority for Waste, Energy and Water (RAAEY, formerly RAE) supervises the market and approves the network tariffs.
Natural gas reaches homes mainly in Attica, Thessaloniki and Thessaly and in a growing number of other cities; many Greek homes still heat with heating oil, electricity or heat pumps.
Greece imports all its gas: by pipeline from Azerbaijan through the Trans Adriatic Pipeline (TAP), from the north through Bulgaria, and as LNG through the Revithoussa terminal near Athens and the floating terminal off Alexandroupolis.

Gas prices in Greece explained
What makes up the price
The bill covers the gas, which usually follows the wholesale market from month to month, the distribution and transmission charges, a special consumption tax and VAT. Because many contracts are variable, the monthly price announced by the supplier matters more than the contract's starting price.
Support during the crisis
During the 2022 crisis the state subsidised household gas bills for each MWh consumed, for months at a time, to soften the jump in monthly prices. The new LNG and pipeline routes have since made Greece a supply route for its neighbours as well.
A growing network
Greece's gas distribution network has been spreading from the big cities into regional towns, so more households can choose gas instead of heating oil; switching usually means installing a new boiler and a connection to the street network.
Reading the Greek figures
In Eurostat's tables Greece appears as EL, from Elláda; the figures shown are its half-yearly averages in euros, with all taxes, for homes using 20–199 GJ a year. Because Greek contracts often change monthly, a half-year average smooths out larger swings within it.
