Gas prices in France
France no longer has regulated gas tariffs for households: the tarifs réglementés de vente ended on 30 June 2023. Since then the energy regulator, the Commission de régulation de l'énergie (CRE), has published a reference price every month, the prix repère de vente de gaz, that suppliers' offers in the GRDF network area can be compared with.
Gas is one of the two main heating energies in French homes, alongside electricity, and is widely used for hot water and cooking in towns connected to the network.
France produces almost no gas of its own. It imports by pipeline, chiefly from Norway, and has some of Europe's largest LNG import capacity, with terminals at Dunkirk, Montoir-de-Bretagne and Fos-sur-Mer. On top of the gas come network charges, the excise duty on natural gas (accise) and VAT.

Gas prices in France explained
What makes up the price
A French gas bill has a subscription (abonnement) and a price per kWh. Together they cover the gas itself, distribution by GRDF or a local distributor, transport and storage, the excise duty on natural gas and VAT. CRE's reference price shows both parts, with and without taxes, for homes that heat with gas and for those that use it only for cooking and hot water.
From the tariff shield to the reference price
During the energy crisis the government froze the regulated gas tariffs at their October 2021 level until June 2023 (bouclier tarifaire) and compensated suppliers for the difference. When the regulated tariffs ended, CRE's monthly reference price took over as the public yardstick, and many suppliers now sell offers indexed to it or fixed for one to three years.
Choosing an offer
The national energy ombudsman (Médiateur national de l'énergie) runs a free comparison tool; check whether a price is fixed or follows the reference price each month. Switching supplier costs nothing and does not interrupt supply. Most homes on the GRDF network have a Gazpar smart meter that sends readings automatically, so bills are based on real consumption.
Reading the French figures
The figures on this page are Eurostat's: the average price per kWh that French households using 20–199 GJ a year paid over a half-year, all taxes included, next to the monthly TTF wholesale average. CRE's monthly reference price is not reproduced here; the regulator publishes it on its own website.
Questions about the gas price
- What does gas cost in France?
- Eurostat's average household price in France was 0.1347 €/kWh in H1 2026, all taxes included.
- Is gas cheaper in France than in neighbouring countries?
- In H1 2026 households in France paid 0.1347 €/kWh, against 0.1156 €/kWh in Germany, 0.0846 €/kWh in Belgium and 0.0787 €/kWh in Spain (Eurostat, in euros). The EU average was 0.1103 €/kWh.
- How has the gas price changed in France?
- From H1 2025 to H1 2026 the household price rose by 3.7%, from 0.1299 €/kWh to 0.1347 €/kWh. Over the last three years it ranged from 0.1181 €/kWh to 0.1436 €/kWh.
- What is the prix repère?
- The prix repère de vente de gaz is the reference price CRE has published every month since the regulated tariffs ended in 2023: what an average gas offer costs in the GRDF area, as a subscription plus a price per kWh, for heating and for cooking and hot water. It is a yardstick, not a price any supplier has to charge.
- Do regulated gas tariffs still exist in France?
- No. The regulated gas tariffs ended for all households on 30 June 2023, and customers still on them were moved to a market offer from their supplier. Regulated tariffs remain for electricity, not for gas.
- What is Gazpar?
- GRDF's smart gas meter. It sends your consumption to the distributor every day, so bills no longer rely on estimates and you can follow your use online.
