Gas prices in Latvia
Latvia's gas market has been open since 2017: households can choose their supplier, while the Public Utilities Commission (Sabiedrisko pakalpojumu regulēšanas komisija, SPRK) regulates the network tariffs of the transmission and storage operator Conexus Baltic Grid and of the distribution company Gaso.
District heating is the main source of heat in Latvian towns, but gas heats many private houses and is widely used for cooking, particularly in and around Riga.
Latvia has the Baltic region's only underground gas storage, at Inčukalns, which also serves Estonia, Lithuania and Finland. Since 1 January 2023 Latvian law has prohibited imports of Russian gas, and supply now arrives mainly as LNG through the terminals in Lithuania and Finland.

Gas prices in Latvia explained
What makes up the price
A Latvian bill combines the supplier's price for the gas with the regulated transmission and distribution charges, excise duty and VAT. Many contracts follow the wholesale price, so the monthly bill can change even without a new contract.
The storage at Inčukalns
Inčukalns lets the region store gas bought in summer for use in winter, and its role grew when Russian supplies ended. Each summer it is filled with gas that has arrived through LNG terminals and pipelines, and in winter it supplies Latvia and its neighbours.
Reading the Latvian figures
Latvia publishes no official household price that this page may show, so the figures are Eurostat's half-yearly averages in euros, with all taxes, for homes using 20–199 GJ a year. Latvia shares one gas market area with Estonia and Finland, which links their wholesale costs closely.
