Gas prices in Portugal
Portuguese households can buy gas on the free market or at regulated tariffs, which the energy regulator ERSE (Entidade Reguladora dos Serviços Energéticos) sets and the last-resort suppliers offer. In 2022 the government let households return to the regulated tariffs, and many did.
Piped natural gas reaches mainly homes in the coastal cities; many Portuguese households still cook and heat water with bottled butane or propane, and electric heating is common.
Portugal has no gas production. Most of its gas arrives as LNG at the Sines terminal on the Atlantic coast, and the rest comes through the pipeline connection with Spain.

Gas prices in Portugal explained
Regulated tariffs and the free market
ERSE sets the regulated tariffs and the network access tariffs for each gas year, which starts in October, and can revise them during the year. Free-market suppliers set their own energy prices on top of the same access tariffs, so households can compare both kinds of contract on the same basis.
2022 in Portugal
As market prices soared in 2022, the government allowed households to move back to the regulated tariffs, which were then lower than many market offers, and many took the chance.
Bottled gas and piped gas
Outside the areas served by the natural gas network, Portuguese households use bottled butane or propane for cooking and hot water. Bottled gas is sold by its own suppliers at its own prices and is covered neither by the natural gas tariffs nor by the figures on this page.
