Gas prices in Lithuania
Lithuanian households mostly buy gas from the state-owned group Ignitis at regulated prices: the National Energy Regulatory Council (Valstybinė energetikos reguliavimo taryba, VERT) sets the rules and approves the price for households, who may also choose another supplier.
District heating supplies most Lithuanian towns, so gas is used mainly for heating private houses and for cooking in many flats.
Lithuania was the first EU country to stop importing Russian gas, in April 2022, thanks to the floating LNG terminal Independence in Klaipėda, which has operated since 2014. The GIPL pipeline to Poland, opened in 2022, links the Baltic states with the rest of the EU gas network.

Gas prices in Lithuania explained
What the regulated price covers
The regulated household price covers the cost of the gas, transmission and distribution and a share of the cost of the LNG terminal, which all gas users help pay for through a security supplement in the network tariffs. VAT is added on top.
Independence from Russian gas
The terminal in Klaipėda was built to end Lithuania's dependence on a single supplier, and in 2022 it let the country buy all its gas on the world LNG market. In 2022 and 2023 the state also used budget compensation to soften the rise in the regulated household price.
Reading the Lithuanian figures
Eurostat's half-yearly averages in euros, with all taxes, are shown here; VERT and Ignitis publish the regulated household tariffs themselves. Lithuania has its own gas market area, separate from the one Estonia and Latvia share with Finland, so its wholesale costs can differ from its northern neighbours'.
