Gas prices in Sweden

Only a small part of Sweden uses natural gas. The gas grid runs from Skåne along the west coast to Gothenburg and Stenungsund, fed through Denmark, and Stockholm has its own city gas network; the rest of the country has no gas grid at all. Suppliers set their prices freely, while the Energy Markets Inspectorate (Energimarknadsinspektionen, Ei) regulates the network tariffs.

Most Swedish homes heat with district heating, heat pumps or electricity, so households mainly use gas for cooking and for heating some houses in Skåne and Västra Götaland. A substantial share of the gas in the Swedish grid is biogas.

Swedish household gas prices are among the highest in the EU. The reasons are energy and carbon dioxide taxes on fossil gas, 25% VAT and a small network whose costs are shared by relatively few customers; the gas itself is bought on the same European market as elsewhere.

Gas prices in Sweden explained

Taxes make the difference

On top of the gas and the network fee, households pay energy tax and carbon dioxide tax on natural gas, both set per cubic metre by the Riksdag, and 25% VAT on everything. Sweden's carbon tax is one of the highest in the world, which alone adds a large amount per kWh compared with most EU countries.

The 2022 crisis and biogas

All gas reaches the Swedish grid through Denmark, so prices for Swedish customers rose sharply with the European market in 2022. Since then the share of biogas in the grid has kept growing, and several suppliers sell contracts with a guaranteed share of biogas.

Choosing a supplier

Gas customers in the west can choose between a handful of suppliers and between variable and fixed prices; compare the total cost per year, including the fixed annual fee, not only the price per kWh. Many households use gas only for a stove, and then the fixed fee weighs more than the price per kWh.

Reading the Swedish figures

This page shows Eurostat's figure in kronor, as Swedish bills are, with all taxes and VAT. The comparison with neighbouring countries uses Eurostat's euro figures for the same half-year, so exchange-rate movements do not blur it.

Is gas cheaper in Sweden than in neighbouring countries?
In H1 2026 households in Sweden paid 0.2201 €/kWh, against 0.1211 €/kWh in Denmark, 0.1156 €/kWh in Germany and 0.0796 €/kWh in Estonia (Eurostat, in euros). The EU average was 0.1103 €/kWh.
How has the gas price changed in Sweden?
From H1 2025 to H1 2026 the household price rose by 0.6%, from 2.3610 SEK/kWh to 2.3747 SEK/kWh. Over the last three years it ranged from 2.0045 SEK/kWh to 2.4054 SEK/kWh.
Why is gas more expensive in Sweden than in Hungary?
Mainly because of taxes and scale. Sweden puts high energy and carbon taxes and 25% VAT on gas and spreads the cost of a small network over few customers, while Hungary's government fixes a low household price up to average consumption under its utility-cost reduction programme. The gas itself costs much the same on the European market.
Where can you get natural gas in Sweden?
In the gas grid that runs from Skåne along the west coast to Gothenburg and Stenungsund, with a few branches inland, and in Stockholm's city gas network. Elsewhere gas is only available as bottled LPG.
What is biogas in the gas grid?
Gas made from food waste, sewage sludge, manure and similar sources, upgraded to the same quality as natural gas and fed into the same pipes. In Sweden it makes up a substantial share of the gas delivered.
