Gas prices in Spain
Spanish households can buy gas on the free market or at the regulated last-resort tariff (TUR), which only the designated reference suppliers offer and which is open to homes using up to 50,000 kWh a year. The government revises the TUR every quarter and publishes it in the Official State Gazette (BOE), while the markets and competition authority, the CNMC, supervises the sector.
Gas heating is less widespread than in northern Europe: many homes heat with electricity or use bottled butane, and piped natural gas is found mostly in towns and cities. Where a home has it, a gas boiler usually provides both heating and hot water.
Spain has hardly any gas of its own but has the largest LNG import capacity in the EU, with several regasification plants along its coasts, plus the Medgaz pipeline from Algeria. Its gas prices therefore follow world LNG markets as well as European ones. Taxes include the excise duty on hydrocarbons and 21% VAT.

Gas prices in Spain explained
What the TUR contains
Each TUR has a fixed term per month and a price per kWh. TUR.1 is for homes using up to 5,000 kWh a year, TUR.2 for up to 15,000 and TUR.3 for up to 50,000; since 2022 there has also been a tariff for residents' associations with shared heating. The tariffs cover the gas and the regulated access tolls, while the hydrocarbon tax, meter rental and VAT come on top.
What Spain did in 2022
Spain cut VAT on gas from 21% to 5% from October 2022, limited how much the TUR could rise each quarter and extended the thermal social bonus (bono social térmico) for vulnerable households. The VAT cut has since ended.
TUR or the free market
For a home that uses little gas the TUR is often among the cheapest options, and moving to or from it is free. Free-market offers may fix the price for a year or bundle services; the CNMC's offer comparator shows them side by side. Gas bills often cover two months, and if the distributor estimates a reading you can report your own.
Reading the Spanish figures
The official figure at the top is TUR.2 for the current quarter, without taxes, because that is how the BOE publishes it. Eurostat's half-yearly figure includes all taxes and VAT, so it is the better guide to what a Spanish household actually pays per kWh.
