Gas prices in Luxembourg
Luxembourg households choose their gas supplier on an open market. The Institut Luxembourgeois de Régulation (ILR) regulates the network tariffs and supervises the suppliers, and the network operator Creos runs most of the grid.
Gas heats many homes in Luxembourg City and the other towns, while heating oil remains common in rural areas; gas is also widely used for hot water and cooking.
Luxembourg has no gas production or storage of its own and imports all its gas through Belgium and Germany, so its prices follow the north-west European market closely.

Gas prices in Luxembourg explained
What makes up the price
The bill covers the gas, the network charges of Creos or the local distributor, a CO₂ tax introduced in 2021 that rises step by step, and VAT. Suppliers offer fixed and variable contracts, and switching is free.
Price stabilisation after 2022
To limit the impact of the 2022 crisis, the government and the social partners agreed in their tripartite talks to stabilise household gas prices, with the state covering part of the cost from October 2022 onwards, so Luxembourg households saw far smaller increases than the wholesale market.
Moving away from fossil heating
Gas boilers are still common in Luxembourg, but the state's Klimabonus programme subsidises energy renovation and renewable heating such as heat pumps, and new homes are built to strict energy-performance standards.
